HEARING: Chairman Brady Announces Secretary Burwell’s Upcoming Testimony on the HHS FY 2017 Budget

February 03, 2016

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Ways and Means Committee Chairman Kevin Brady (R-TX) announced today that the Committee will hold a hearing on President Obama’s budget proposals for the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for fiscal year 2017 on Wednesday, February 10th at 2:00 PM.

The sole witness will be the Honorable Sylvia Mathews Burwell, Secretary, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

In announcing the hearing, Chairman Brady said:

“We are looking forward to hearing from Secretary Burwell next week about the President’s budget proposals affecting programs that fall within our jurisdiction.

“Our committee will also insist on accountability for the President’s previous promises to the American people. Every week, we learn more details about how our entitlement programs are unsustainable. Recently, the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) found that Federal health care programs will grow from $1.1 trillion this year to $2 trillion in 2026. We also know that the Medicare Hospital Insurance Trust Fund that our seniors rely on will be exhausted in 2026, four years sooner than previously projected. The American people deserve more answers on why the Administration continues to raid billions from Medicare to pay for its ever growing – and failing – Obamacare entitlement program.

“Our hearing will be an excellent opportunity for Americans to hear directly from the Administration about policies that impact their lives and from our Members about our committee’s pro-growth agenda.”

On February 9, 2016, President Obama is expected to submit his fiscal year 2017 budget proposal to Congress. The President’s proposed budget will contain his tax, spending and policy proposals for the coming fiscal year. Secretary Burwell will discuss the details of the President’s proposals involving the Department of Health and Human Services that are within the Committee’s jurisdiction, including Medicare, health care programs under the Affordable Care Act, Child Support Enforcement, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, and a number of child welfare programs.
