Ways and Means Continues Efforts to Improve Medicare with Third Member Day Hearing

June 09, 2016

After the House unanimously passed a bipartisan Medicare bill that will help medical providers better serve patients, the Ways and Means Health Subcommittee heard from Members on both sides of the aisle about their ideas for preserving and strengthening Medicare. At the hearing, which marks the Ways and Means Committee’s third “Member Day,” 20 Members presented more than 30 legislative proposals to help ensure this important program meets the needs of our seniors and also works well for providers, physicians, and taxpayers.

As Health Subcommittee Chairman Pat Tiberi (R-OH) said at the start of the hearing:

“Today, similar to our last Member Day hearing on ‘Tax-Related Proposals to Improve Health Care,’ this subcommittee is providing a public platform for any and all interested Members of Congress to discuss bills they have introduced that modify the way health care is accessed and delivered to the more than 55 million seniors who rely on the Medicare program.

“Members have put a lot of work into developing and drafting these pieces of legislation. And this Member Day hearing is their opportunity to share with their colleagues— and the American people— why these bills are important and why this committee should take them up.”

Ranking Member Jim McDermott (D-WA) added:

“Today’s hearing is part of what must be an ongoing process of careful debate that will show the American people what their Congress is doing – or not doing – to improve their health security.”

In addition to Members of the Health Subcommittee, the following Members testified:

  • Representative Dave Reichert (R-WA)
  • Representative Robert Dold (R-IL)
  • Representative Kristi Noem (R-SD)
  • Representative Charles Boustany (R-LA)
