Since Obamacare was signed into law, President Obama and Democrats in Congress have regularly broken their promises to the American people. Americans were told:

• “If you like your doctor, you will be able to keep your doctor.”
• “We’ll lower premiums by up to $2,500 for a typical family per year.”
• “This law means more choice, more competition, lower costs for millions of Americans.”

Each of these empty promises never came true. Under Obamacare, Americans have struggled to afford their health care costs, access insurance that meets their needs, and see the doctor they know and like.

And now some Democrats are trying to convince Americans that millions of people will lose their insurance when Republicans finally repeal the broken Obamacare system. As Ways and Means Committee Chairman Kevin Brady (R-TX) recently said, this is:

“the new big lie in health care.”

The good news is that House Republicans are committed to repealing Obamacare and replacing it with a 21st century health care system that lowers costs, expands access to more choices, and increases quality. In an interview with the Houston Chronicle last week, Chairman Brady explained how House Republicans are working with our new Administration to finally deliver health care that works for the American people:

“The individual mandate failed because it forced people to buy health care they didn’t want and couldn’t afford.” 

“Unlike Obamacare, Republicans are not going to rip health care out of the hands of the American people. There will be an appropriate, deliberate transition so Americans can fully choose health care that works for them, rather than health care that works for Washington.”  

Here are the facts:

• House Republicans are working to repeal this failing law. Premiums are skyrocketing, insurers are fleeing the market, and Americans still struggle to access the care they need. House Republicans are focused on removing the maze of mandates, taxes, and regulations that drives up premiums, stifles choices, and stands in the way of the patient-doctor relationship. But we are not going to do this overnight. We will build in a transition period so Congress can develop the right policies and the American people can have the time to look for better health care options.

• House Republicans are advancing health care policies that help Americans of all walks of life. As we proposed in A Better Way for Health Care Reform, House Republicans are working on policies that actually expand access to affordable, quality health care. We preserve important patient protections such as allowing dependents to stay on their parents’ plan until they are 26 and prohibiting health insurers from denying coverage to patients based on pre-existing conditions, so young adults and some of our most vulnerable Americans can continue their coverage. And we promote market-based policies that spur innovation competition—driving down premium costs and making health care more affordable across the board.

  
  Unlike the one-size-fits-all approach under Obamacare, our plan gives Americans the flexibility to pick a health insurance plan that fits their budget and meets their needs—not Washington’s mandates. Essentially, we treat health care like a “backpack.” Every American who chooses will be able to fill their “backpack” with three tools: financial support for an insurance plan, access to a health savings account, and their personal medical records. Like a backpack, Americans will be able to access this support throughout their lives—from job to job, state to state, home to raise a family or start a business, and into their retirement years. As proposed in A Better Way, we continue to provide support even after a transition by empowering states with increased flexibility, modernizing Medicaid in a way that prioritizes the most vulnerable, and making it easier for Americans to purchase the coverage of their choosing that best meets their needs. This is the portable, affordable, personalized, 21st century health care system Americans deserve.
