W&M Members Ready to Deliver Pro-Growth Tax Reform

November 14, 2017

This week the House is set to vote on H.R. 1 – the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. This historic legislation, which was passed out of the Ways and Means Committee last Thursday, will overhaul our nation’s broken tax code to deliver meaningful tax relief, create jobs, and increase paychecks for hardworking Americans all across the country.

As Ways and Means Committee Chairman and lead bill sponsor, Rep. Kevin Brady (R-TX), said after the Committee voted to pass the legislation last week:

“After years of work, dozens of hearings, and multiple frameworks, we are one step closer to delivering true tax reform to the American people. This would not have been possible without our Members’ hard work and commitment to pro-growth solutions that will improve lives.”

Ways and Means Committee Republicans have dedicated countless hours to drafting this pro-growth bill, and they’re ready to take the next step by bringing H.R. 1 to the floor:

Rep. Peter Roskam (R-IL), Chairman of the Tax Policy Subcommittee:

“The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act is good legislation. It respects and rewards hard work by allowing taxpayers to keep more of the money they earn in their paychecks. We are fighting for hardworking taxpayers and a healthy economy so that we can grow our economy and allow America to compete and win. Under this tax plan, everyone benefits and everyone has the same opportunities.”

Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA):

“The product of years of discussion and analysis, this bill will usher in the most dramatic overhaul of the tax code in a generation.”

Rep. Dave Reichert (R-WA):

“The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act is bold and changes the status-quo giving relief to families and making the tax code more competitive, so our businesses can grow, hire more workers, and invest here at home. This will get our economy booming and lead to the creation of more jobs across our communities.”

Rep. Vern Buchanan (R-FL):

“This bill provides tax relief to middle-class families and small business owners across America. Not only will the average family of four receive a tax cut but small businesses will finally be taxed at a rate that allows them to expand and create good-paying jobs.”

Rep. Adrian Smith (R-NE):

“Americans at all income levels will see tax cuts under this bill, which the head of the nonpartisan Joint Committee on Taxation confirmed on the first day of our markup. Many provisions are designed to help working families, namely the doubling of the standard deduction, increasing the child tax credit, and lowering tax rates across the board.”

Rep. Lynn Jenkins (R-KS):

“Not only will this legislation reform our broken tax code, but it will permanently lower tax rates for families and businesses, it includes popular benefits such as the dependent care assistance program for hard-working families and will provide a much-needed tax cut for hard-working individuals. This will be a tax code that rewards individuals and families for their hard-work and helps them keep more of their hard-earned money.”

Rep. Erik Paulsen (R-MN):

Making the tax code clearer, simpler, and fairer will help create a healthier economy with more jobs and bigger paychecks. Mainstreet Minnesota small businesses will be able to hire more people and give their employees a raise. Our employers will be able to compete around the world selling American goods and services, and invest more in American headquarters, jobs, research, and innovation. And, families across Minnesota will have more money in their pockets to save for the future.”

Rep. Kenny Marchant (R-TX):

“Moving the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act through the committee process means families, individuals and businesses in North Texas are one step closer to having a tax code that works for everyone instead of the broken status quo we have now. A tax code built for the American worker and one that encourages companies to invest in America instead of overseas produces economic growth that reaches all corners of our economy.”

Rep. Diane Black (R-TN):

“We promised a fairer, flatter and simpler tax code, giving middle income families much needed relief from our current code, and we did just that. … We promised more of your paycheck in your pocket and we delivered.”

Rep. Tom Reed (R-NY):

“I will always stand with and protect the hardworking taxpayers of our region. I have heard the voices of those from Jamestown to Owego to Geneva, and the message is clear: people deserve a tax cut. This legislation will deliver on that.”

Rep. Mike Kelly (R-PA):

The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act will lower taxes, increase take-home pay, and expand the economy for middle- and lower-income Americans all over our country. It will level the playing field for American companies to grow, hire, and be globally competitive.”

Rep. Jim Renacci (R-OH):

We have to be competitive. Today we are not competitive. … That’s why businesses are leaving and going overseas. … We have to reduce this corporate tax rate because we have to be able to compete in a global marketplace.”

Rep. Pat Meehan (R-PA):

“I’m pleased to see the additional refinements and improvements made over the course of the committee’s markup, like the inclusion of the Adoption Tax Credit. I’m hopeful that the bill will receive broad support among my colleagues when it’s considered on the House floor and that the Senate will move forward its version of the tax reform legislation so we can reconcile any differences and get tax relief for middle-class families signed into law.”

Rep. Kristi Noem (R-SD):

“This is the most significant step we’ve taken toward comprehensive tax reform in more than 30 years … It’s a plan that finally respects and rewards hard work. It delivers much lower tax rates and simplifies things enough so most people won’t need an army of accountants to pay their taxes or build their business. We’re making sure everyone starts playing by the same rules and can experience the benefits of higher wages and increased job creation.”

Rep. Jason Smith (R-MO):

“We are one step closer to giving Americans and Missourians the tax cut they deserve. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act is going to put more money in people’s pockets, create more jobs in America and allow folks to focus on what matters most. President Trump is ready to sign this legislation. I know the House of Representatives is ready to act quickly to deliver tax cuts to Americans, and I hope the Senate will do the same.”

Rep. Tom Rice (R-SC):

“The American middle class is smaller today than what it was in 1990, and 27 years later they are making just about the same salary. This is unacceptable. Too many people in this country hear that America is the Land of Opportunity but just don’t believe it. This bill gives them a reason to believe. This bill is focused on putting more money back in the pockets of hardworking Americans and helping businesses thrive so we can restore this Land of Opportunity for all Americans.”

Rep. David Schweikert (R-AZ):

“This tax reform is so much more than just tax cuts. This is designed to create economic growth. As a society, we have trillions and trillions of unfunded liabilities and promises we have made to our seniors and others, and we do not have the money. The only way we can get close to it is we must grow economically and that means American businesses have to stop leaving our country and moving their headquarters overseas. This demonstrates that by fixing the problems in our tax code. Businesses from around the world are coming back home.”

Rep. Jackie Walorski (R-IN):

The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act will finally deliver the fair and simple tax code you deserve — one that cuts taxes for middle-class families and once again makes America the best place in the world to start and grow a business.

“This bill will give workers and businesses a better chance to succeed. It will simplify the tax code by eliminating special-interest loopholes. And it will let you keep more of the money you earn.”

Rep. Carlos Curbelo (R-FL):

“The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act puts middle-income American families first with a larger child tax credit and a new family flexibility credit that will help them keep more of their hard-earned paychecks. … We’re also giving small businesses and American companies a chance to compete and win in the new globalized economy. By providing businesses of all sizes with lower tax rates, we will make it easier for our entrepreneurs and job creators to invest here at home and increase pay checks for American workers.”

Rep. Mike Bishop (R-MI):

“Tax reform is not easy – that’s why it has taken more than 30 years to get here today. The ‘Tax Cuts and Jobs Act’ is about delivering real relief for our families and Main Street job creators, so they can keep more of what they earned and grow our economy from the ground up.”
