House Ways and Means Republican Leader Kevin Brady (R-TX) joined NBC to talk about the importance of replenishing the Paycheck Protection Program in order to support America’s small businesses and their workers. The Small Business Administration announced this morning that, in the wake of Democrats continued delay, the PPP has now run out of money:
Why Congress must continue to support small businesses:
“There is a lot more work to do, including the need to replenish these funds. … Congress really needs to replenish this fund now.”
“I think we’re hitting those small businesses who need it. And I think we can do even more. Part of this is we’re just hearing concerns locally that there won’t be money for them, especially in the minority community in those underserved communities where not every business has that banking relationship. That’s why the extra $250 billion the President has asked for is so crucial. We can’t leave them out.”
We must continue to focus on helping workers:
“All of this is focused on keeping their workers on the job or close to that business, helping that business ride this out so they’re ready to rebound. We think the best way to do that is to keep those workers employed. That’s where they get the best health care, the best benefits, and that’s where their stress level is the least.”
“I do think it’s designed to deliver that cash flow relief.”
On reopening our economy:
“It will come conditionally. It will be as health conditions permit. It will be done as we can make sure it’s safe for workers and their customers. It will be done working in coordination with the state and local governments.”
“As we flatten that curve out, we’ll know we’re no longer threatening to overload our health care system. That is going to be a crucial sign for reopening.”
“I don’t think a flip will be switched across the country. I think this will be a rolling reopening as conditions permit.”
