USMCA: An Agreement for the 21st Century

June 28, 2021

This week, we are celebrating USMCA’s one-year anniversary by highlighting its benefits for workers, small businesses, and our economy.

One of the Agreement’s most innovative features is a new provision governing digital trade — a key element of commerce that didn’t even exist when the original North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) was crafted in 1994.

The digital chapter included in USMCA provides new market access for products that were left out of the old agreement.

KEY TAKEAWAYS:

  • Crafted in 1994, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) was written before the internet became the primary medium for commerce.
  • USMCA was created for the digital age, and includes a first-of-its-kind digital chapter.
  • This novel digital chapter removes barriers and sets clear standards for how we trade online, helping innovators in all sectors and strengthening the American economy.
