As the Biden Administration’s trade moratorium continues to keep the United States on the sidelines of trade negotiations around the world, Ways and Means Republicans are calling for closer cooperation with the United Kingdom on economic policies, including a free trade agreement (FTA).
Ways and Means Republican Leader Rep. Kevin Brady (R-TX) and Republican Leader of the Ways and Means Subcommittee on Trade, Rep. Adrian Smith (R-NE), joined by all Ways & Means Republicans, today sent a letter to UK Secretary for International Trade Kemi Badenoch conveying this message. The letter states:
“While an FTA may not presently be on the table, we have an opportunity to continue laying the groundwork in our respective countries and stand ready to work with you toward that goal.
“It is no secret that there are many challenges ahead of us, including a Biden Administration that currently is not prioritizing international trade negotiations and concerns among Members of Congress over the Northern Ireland Protocol.
“We hope that these challenges can be overcome to pave the way for a gold-standard FTA that will set the U.S.-UK economic relationship on an upward trajectory while also advancing our shared goals of peace and stability.”
