“Americans deserve the truth, and President Biden isn’t telling it.”
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith (MO-08) released the following statement after the House of Representatives voted to formally launch an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden. The vote reaffirms Congress’s constitutional authority to compel the Administration to provide documents and make witnesses available related to an investigation into President Biden’s involvement in his family’s foreign business dealings, as well as possible criminal campaign finance violations committed by his 2020 presidential campaign.
Chairman Smith said, “Americans deserve the truth, and President Biden isn’t telling it. For months the Biden Administration has refused to comply with the Ways and Means, Judiciary, and Oversight Committee’s requests for information and limited the ability of witnesses to answer questions or appear as part of our investigation into the Biden Family’s lucrative influence peddling operation, as well as potential criminal activity on behalf of Joe Biden’s presidential campaign. In the process, we have learned about obstruction at the Department of Justice that was first reported by two brave IRS whistleblowers who came forward to the Ways and Means Committee.
“The U.S. Constitution gives Congress ultimate authority when it comes to oversight of the Executive Branch. Congressional subpoenas are not suggestions – they are a mandate from the American people. By voting to formally launch an impeachment inquiry today, the House has ensured that it is at the peak of its constitutional authority to continue following the facts wherever they lead. The American people deserve accountability. That means they deserve to know whether their president is corrupt or compromised, and they can rest assured knowing that House Republicans will work hard to get to the bottom of President Biden’s involvement in his family’s efforts to sell the Biden brand around the world.”
