Smith: America Will Not Tolerate Chinese Cyber Attacks

December 31, 2024

Washington, D.C. – Following public reporting that one of China’s intelligence agencies hacked the U.S. Treasury Department, U.S. House Committee on Ways and Means Chairman Jason Smith (MO-08) is demanding answers:

“America’s enemies will continue to test our resolve until we make clear that there are consequences. This is yet another cyber attack on President Biden’s watch – and the details are worrisome. According to reports, early in December, Treasury employees’ own workstations were left vulnerable, and hackers – purportedly affiliated with the Chinese government – accessed government employee workstations and could see official materials. This attack follows another on our telecommunications infrastructure. This is the latest indication that America must not allow itself to fall behind China. I am urging the Treasury Department, including the Office of the Inspector General, to investigate, to explain to Congress how they will ensure sensitive information is not left vulnerable again, and to detail how they plan to help the incoming Trump Administration succeed in warding off such attacks.”
