Seven Key Moments: Las Vegas Field Hearing on Pro-Worker, Pro-Family Tax Relief in The One, Big, Beautiful Bill

July 29, 2025

Las Vegas, Nevada – In front of the iconic “Welcome to Las Vegas” neon sign inside of the warehouse of that actual sign manufacturer, the Ways and Means Committee heard directly from hardworking Nevadans about how they will benefit from The One, Big, Beautiful Bill. President Trump’s new tax relief for workers and seniors – no tax on tips, no tax on overtime, and no tax on Social Security – will put more money in the pockets of those Americans who need it most. Witnesses shared how they plan to use the extra tax savings from The One, Big, Beautiful Bill to take care of themselves and their family. A DoorDash driver said the law and the additional income she will get to keep would allow her to travel to spend more time with her family and help cover medical expenses for her husband. For the average household, take-home pay is projected to increase by nearly $11,000, which will allow families to cover necessities, like a mortgage, groceries, and back-to-school supplies.

Twenty-one percent of workers in Las Vegas earn their living through tips, the largest share in the nation. No tax on tips alone amounts to a $230 million tax cut for the region’s tipped workers.

Witnesses included a waiter, food delivery driver, paint foreman, manufacturing worker, senior, and a working mother.

What Happens in Vegas Won’t Stay in Vegas: Tax Cut Born in Las Vegas Benefits 4 Million Tipped Workers

In addition to leading the nation in the share of workers who earn tips, Las Vegas is the birthplace of President Trump’s no tax on tips policy. The One, Big, Beautiful Bill will have an outsized impact on the local economy, helping waitresses, bellhops, bartenders, and others keep their hard-earned tips. Across the nation, 4 million tipped workers will receive an average $1,300 tax cut from just the no tax on tips law alone.

Chairman Jason Smith (MO-08): “Here, in Las Vegas, 21 percent of workers make their living on tips. This city leads the nation in the share of its workers who earn tips. It only makes sense that it is also the birthplace of one of President Trump’s signature tax relief ideas: no tax on tips. Waitresses, bartenders, bellhops, service workers, and other tipped employees will get a $1,300 tax cut compared to what they pay today. No tax on tips will translate to over $230 million back into the pockets of tipped workers in just the Las Vegas metro alone…But what will happen here in Vegas will not stay just in Vegas, because America’s 4 million tipped workers will also benefit from no tax on tips.

No Tax on Tips Will Change Lives

For tipped workers, the $1,300 tax savings will help them cover basic necessities and improve their quality of life. For one Nevada food delivery driver, no tax on tips will help her travel more frequently to visit her family in Missouri.

Sharon Simmons, Nevada DoorDash driver: “That’s why I’m very excited that Congress took action to include Dashers and other independent contractors in the no tax on tips. For someone like me, that means hundreds or potentially thousands of dollars that stay in my pocket every year. I plan to use these tax savings to cover follow-up medical visits for my husband and to travel to Missouri to see my mom, my kids and my grandchildren. No tax on tips will literally allow me to see my family more often.”

The One, Big, Beautiful Bill Rewards Hard Work

The One, Big, Beautiful Bill recognizes the contributions of working class Americans by guaranteeing they keep more of their paycheck. No tax on tips, no tax on overtime, and tax relief for seniors are targeted towards Americans who work hard to earn a living. A paint foreman for the company hosting the hearing pointed out that the new tax relief helps fulfill a fundamental American ideal: hard work will turn any dream into a reality.

Eric Byington, Nevada paint foreman: “I wake up at 4 AM to come to this job that I love for this beautiful company. These are the things that make it worthwhileThis is actually a change for the working-class Americans. It’s the incentive. That’s what this country has been about since day one. The harder you work, the more you’re rewarded, and that’s what this bill does. You work overtime. You’re working hard; you’re staying late. Now you’re rewarded. You’re working weekends. You’re rewarded. You work hard as a server, you spent your time paying Social Security your whole life, now you’re trying to retire and enjoy your hard work. Now there’s no taxes on that.

No Tax on Social Security Lets Seniors Keep Hard-Earned Benefits

Seniors were squeezed by rising prices during the Biden Administration. One hearing witness, a Nevada senior, told the Committee she had to use the money she saved during the first Trump Administration to cover her bills over the last four years. The new $6,000 deduction for Social Security recipients will help seniors like her pay the bills and remove the fear of running out of savings.

Nancy Overman, Nevada retiree: “As a Social Security recipient, one key policy that means a great deal to me and others in my situation is the new $6,000 deduction for middle-class seniors, which will help to offset taxes we pay on Social Security. Seniors like me are not wealthy and we are not looking for handouts, but we have paid into this system for decades, and when living on a fixed income, every penny saved makes a differenceFor me, personally, this deduction means I will be better able to manage the basics like groceries, utilities and the occasional unexpected expense without draining what little savings I have left.

No Tax on Overtime Encourages More Blue-Collar Manufacturing Jobs

The One, Big, Beautiful Bill expands upon the pro-worker tax relief in the 2017 Trump tax cuts, which grew real wages almost five percent in two years, the fastest pace in two decades. The One, Big, Beautiful Bill will extend this record through President Trump’s tax relief for hardworking Americans: no tax on tips, no tax on overtime, and tax relief for seniors. A Nevada manufacturer noted how no tax on overtime will serve as an incentive for Americans to fill jobs in manufacturing, a sector known for its overtime pay and in need of more labor. No tax on overtime complements other elements of President Trump’s tax and trade agenda focused on bringing more manufacturing and production back to the United States.

Rep. Adrian Smith (NE-03): “Talk about employment, employee retention, recruitment, wages. Wages grew under what we did in 2017 faster than what executive compensation did. The bill then and the bill now I believe is great for workers and great for the economy. But if you could, elaborate on worker impact.

Austin Robinson, Nevada manufacturer: “Looking back to what happened in 2017, 2018 there was probably one of the largest growth of wages in the middle class in probably recent years. During that time, it generated a lot of people changing jobs, looking for more wages or benefits to improve their position financially. Currently with us, with the no tax on overtime, it’s going to encourage more people to move into the manufacturing sector for better pay and better wages, but then also the overtime.”

No Tax on Tips Helps Nevada Waiter Pay Entire Year’s Electric Bill

No tax on tips will help Americans pay the bills, feed their family, and get ahead. A Nevada waiter shared how the tax cut he will receive is large enough to cover his home energy bill for an entire year. Conversely, had Congress failed to pass The One, Big, Beautiful Bill, the average family would have had to pay the equivalent of nine weeks of groceries in higher taxes.

Rep. David Kustoff (TN-08): “Mr. Wrona, thank you for being here today. You’ve got a unique perspective because you are a server, and you’ve employed servers in the restaurant business. What does this bill – the no tax on tips and no tax on overtime – mean for the people you work with today?

Patrick Wrona, Nevada server: Regardless of where anybody I work with stands politically, they’re all excited about this. We talk about it at work. I don’t know a single person that doesn’t want more money in their pocket. What it equates to in real dollars is approximately what I would pay for energy at my house. It’s basically like my energy bills just got taken care of for the year.”

Bigger Child Tax Credit Helps Nevada Mom Instill American Values

40 million families will get a bigger Child Tax Credit, thanks to The One, Big, Beautiful Bill. Middle-class families will permanently get $2,200, adjusted for inflation, each year to provide for their child. Had Congress failed to act, the credit would have been slashed in half, adding insult to injury for parents reeling from the inflation crisis created by Democrats under President Biden. A Nevada mother shared how the larger credit will help provide for her daughter while teaching her the lessons of hard work. Other tax cuts for families in The One, Big, Beautiful Bill include additional help to pay for child care, education, and health care.

Rep. Michelle Fischbach (MN-07): “Mrs. Jones, you mentioned the Child Tax Credit. I want to know what that extra money is really going to mean for your family.

Yadusha Jones, Nevada mother and small business owner: “It means a lot. We have kids in elementary all the way up to high school. It gives us the opportunity. We have a daughter – she can start driving soon. We’ll be able to help her purchase a car. We want to show her work ethic, so we are going to match what she brings to the table. We are not just going to hand her money. It’s all about work ethic.

Tax Relief Empowers Workers to Chase the American Dream

Working Americans have more incentive to pursue the American Dream of a better life and more financial security for themselves and their family because of The One, Big, Beautiful Bill. Every additional table waited on, overtime hour worked, or extra shift taken up, will lead to more money in their pocket. Unlike the Biden Administration who paid Americans to sit at home, President Trump and Republicans are celebrating the contributions working men and women provide to their families, employers, and communities.

Rep. Blake Moore (UT-01): “If all of the sudden you can keep more of your take-home pay from taxes or overtime, are you more or less inclined to work harder?

Eric Byington, Nevada paint foreman: “I’m going to be inclined to work harder, because it directly benefits me. That’s what this bill does. We’ve spent so much time debating about government benefits that are helping people who don’t want to work or don’t belong here. But the American Dream is – and you can tell from the diversity of this panel, diversity of this room – it’s what America is built on. The harder you work, the more successful you are. It’s a proven fact.

Sharon Simmons, Nevada DoorDash driver: “Of course I’m going to work harder, because the more I work, the more tips I can potentially receive, which means more going into my household.

Patrick Wrona, Nevada server: “Of course I want to work harder. I like to work hard. You know life is hard. That’s what makes it great. This just makes it a little bit easier, and it provides incentive to continue working hard.
