WASHINGTON, D.C. – America’s seniors will get new tax relief thanks to the $6,000 bonus senior deduction included in The One, Big, Beautiful Bill, and it could not come soon enough. Under the inflationary policies of President Biden and Congressional Democrats, not only did seniors struggle to make ends meet as the cost of everyday essentials soared, many seniors were required to pay taxes on their Social Security benefits for the first time.
The One, Big, Beautiful Bill helps seniors keep more of their hard-earned money and send less to Washington in the form of taxes.
“President Trump delivered and fulfilled his promise to America’s seniors to put more money back into their pocket through The One, Big, Beautiful Bill. No tax on Social Security means almost 90% of seniors will see zero taxation of those benefits and will help more seniors keep the hard-earned Social Security they spent their entire lives working for,” said Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith (MO-08). “This tax cut is desperately needed relief for seniors who have struggled to afford basic goods and services under the inflationary policies of Joe Biden and those who were forced to pay taxes on their Social Security benefits for the first time because of the Washington spending spree Democrats undertook.”
At a recent Ways and Means hearing in Las Vegas, a Nevada senior shared how the new deduction will make a big difference for her. Under the first Trump Administration, she was able to budget and live within her means. By contrast, she had to pay taxes on her Social Security benefits as they tried to keep up with inflation during the Biden Administration and had to use savings to pay living expenses.
Nancy Overman, Nevada retiree: “During President Trump’s first term, I was able to live within my means, manage my budget, and even put a little away. But under President Biden, inflation hit hard, and I was forced to dip into my personal savings just to keep up with everyday costs.
“As a Social Security recipient, one key policy that means a great deal to me and others in my situation is the new $6,000 deduction for middle-class seniors which will help to offset the taxes we pay on Social Security. Seniors like me are not wealthy – and we are not looking for handouts – but we have paid into this system for decades and when living on a fixed income, every penny saved makes a difference. This deduction gives seniors like me some breathing room, helps us keep up with rising costs, and sends the message that our contributions are still valued. For me personally, this deduction means I will be able to better manage the basics like groceries, utilities, and the occasional unexpected medical expense, without draining what little savings I have left.”
