Friendly reminder: we’re now five days out from the 2021 tax filing deadline, which is Monday, April 18.
Unfortunately, taxpayers may have to wait longer for their tax filings to get processed after filing by Tax Day, as a result of President Biden’s historic IRS backlog of millions of outstanding tax returns.
Here are some fast facts:
- Democrats want to weaponize the IRS: The Biden Administration has failed to help American taxpayers this tax filing season by focusing instead on adding more to the agency’s plate and advocating for a weaponized IRS.
- The IRS backlog is a crisis for taxpayers: These returns represent millions of Americans waiting on money that they may rely on for essentials like groceries and childcare. Within his first year in office, President Biden has overseen $6 trillion in total spending with more than $1 billion earmarked specifically by the Democrats for COVID response by the IRS, but it took months of Republican pressure to take action on the then more than 20 million tax return backlog.
- Republicans are fighting on behalf of taxpayers: At the GOP’s urging, the IRS announced it will use money in its existing budget to hire 10,000 workers to address the crisis. IRS officials do not expect to resolve the backlog until the end of 2022.
