WASHINGTON, D.C. – House Ways and Means Trade Subcommittee Chairman Dave Reichert (R-WA) today announced that the Subcommittee will hold a hearing entitled “Expanding U.S. Agriculture Trade and Eliminating Barriers to U.S. Exports” on Tuesday, June 14th at 10:00 AM in room 1100 of the Longworth House Office Building. The hearing will focus on the benefits of U.S. agriculture trade and how foreign barriers negatively impact the American economy.
The hearing focus will include: (1) U.S. successes as the world’s largest agriculture exporter, including job creation and economic growth; (2) foreign tariff and non-tariff barriers faced by U.S. agriculture exports; and (3) how current and future trade agreements and other efforts can reduce those barriers.
Upon announcing the hearing, Chairman Reichert said:
“In order for our economy and rural America to grow, the United States must maintain its status as the world’s largest agriculture exporter in the face of increasing competition worldwide.
“We must continue to take action to knock down barriers imposed by other countries on our agriculture exports. Trade agreements are an important tool to ensure that our exporters can compete on a level playing field – as long as these agreements are done right and are enforced. We have a responsibility to ensure that our trade agreements create high standards and contain tools to force our competitors to fully live up to their obligations.
“I look forward to discussing how we can create more jobs and opportunities for U.S. farmers, ranchers, and processors, as well as manufacturers and service providers. This hearing is another important part of our pro-growth agenda.”
