Agency’s Failure to Respond Prompts Camp to Request IG Investigation into CMS’ Gag Order

September 29, 2009 — Press Releases

Washington, DC – Ways and Means Ranking Member Dave Camp (R-MI) today requested the Health and Human Services (HHS) Inspector General (IG) open a formal investigation into the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ (CMS) decision to slap a gag order on all Medicare Advantage (MA) health plans (except AARP, whom is spending millions of dollars to try to raise support for President Obama’s bill).  Camp had previously called for CMS to explain the unprecedented action by today, but the agency has yet to respond.

“The American people have a right to know what health reform will mean to them, and they have a right to know that millions of seniors will have their Medicare benefits cut if the President’s plan is enacted,” said Camp.  “Why is the Administration trying to prevent seniors from getting accurate information about this bill?  We need answers and if they won’t provide them, the Inspector General should.”

Camp’s letter to the Daniel Levinson, HHS IG, can be read here.
