Washington, DC – Today, Ways and Means Chairman Dave Camp (R-MI) and Health Subcommittee Chairman Wally Herger (R-CA) sent a letter to Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius requesting information on the operations and practices of the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI), including an explanation of why Medicare and Medicaid duties are being delegated to the U.S. Department of Energy and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. CMMI provides the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services with what amounts to a blanket authority and unchecked powers, as its activities and initiatives do not require Congressional approval, public comment, or rulemaking.
“It is tough to imagine that it takes so much energy to implement the Democrats’ failed health care law that a U.S. Department of Energy laboratory specializing in clean energy has to take on Medicare and Medicaid work. The Administration’s latest move raises many questions, and given the fact that CCMI will receive billions in taxpayer dollars with no strings attached, the American people and Congress expect and deserve to know how that money is being spent and for what.”
