Washington, DC – Today, Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp (R-MI) released the following statement in reaction to a proposal put forward by Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) that would cut federal spending by more than $1 trillion and avoid a default on America’s debt – which the Treasury Department has warned could happen in less than 10 days.
 
“House Republicans put forward and passed a cut-cap-and-balance plan that would get out-of-control spending in Washington back under control.  Democrats in the Senate refused to even consider the plan.  Now, despite the President having failed to put even a single plan on the table, Speaker Boehner has acted responsibly by proposing a second plan to cut out-of-control federal spending and avoid a default on our debt.   A default would harm our economy and further depress job creation.  The time for Democrats and the President to get serious about the need to cut spending is long overdue.  This plan deserves bipartisan support and once it passes the House, the Senate should immediately take up the legislation and send it to the President.”
