WASHINGTON, D.C. – House Ways and Means Health Subcommittee Chairman Peter Roskam (R-IL) announced today that the Subcommittee will hold a hearing on “Modernizing Stark Law to Ensure the Successful Transition from Volume to Value in the Medicare Program.” The hearing will examine the need for and possible solutions for modernizing physician self-referral law, or “Stark Law,” to increase the ability of the Medicare program to successfully move to a system that rewards higher value, coordinated health care over volume. The hearing will take place on Tuesday, July 17, 2018 in 1100 Longworth House Office Building, beginning at 3:30 PM.

Upon announcing the hearing, Chairman Roskam said:

“As the Medicare program transitions from a fully fee-for-service volume incentivized system to one that rewards value, it is important to recognize the potential statutory and regulatory barriers in doing so. This hearing is the first step in exploring these options as they relate to the lack of modernization of Stark Law in the face of value-based reforms.  While it is clear that there are other burdens that physicians face with these programs, the lack of Stark modernization is a clear barrier to reforms that reward better outcomes and higher value care. The hearing will both inform our Members and the public on the Administration’s efforts in this cause––as well as stakeholder concerns over what actions Congress needs to take. We look forward to hearing from our witnesses and taking this first step to aligning current law with current expectations.”
