ICYMI | Rep. Miller Op-Ed: Tax Relief Package Created By and For Working Families

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act extends and builds on the success of the 2017 Trump tax cuts, writes Ways and Means Republican Carol Miller (WV-01) in an op-ed for the Charleston Gazette.

As noted in the op-ed, the legislation incorporates ideas gathered at a series of hearings held outside Washington to hear directly from small business owners and working families. The first field hearing, and first hearing of the Ways and Means Committee in the Republican majority, was held in Petersburg, West Virginia.

The lack of action on the Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act hurts hardworking families:

“When President Trump’s Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) became law in 2017, West Virginia received tax cuts that we hadn’t experienced in decades. Finally, the federal government was working for the American people… This bill is the first step in enshrining these tax cuts into law and will help everyone in West Virginia and across the country. However, these policies could end if we don’t act now.”

Ways and Means Committee’s field hearings have been vital to understanding the economic challenges facing small businesses and working families:

“The first Ways and Means hearing of the 118th Congress was in Petersburg, West Virginia. This set the tone for the committee and set the framework of the tax package. It would ultimately pass the House of Representatives with the support of 357 members of Congress. Because of the various testimonies from a small business owner, a veteran, a coal miner, and a mother of three, Congress is well on its way to providing Americans with a fairer tax code and concentrated benefits.”

The bill is a win for parents, who will benefit from an expanded Child Tax Credit earned through work and stops their tax dollars from being lost to fraud:

“This bill incentivizes parents to work hard to support their families and applies to households of all sizes so every child can be taken care of. Republicans know that families have been hit hard by the Biden Administration’s inflationary policies, so we adjusted the $2,000 child tax credit for inflation starting as soon as the bill is signed into law…The Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act helps eliminate fraud and waste by cutting off funding for a COVID-era spending program. While many have been back to work for years, others have taken advantage of the support of the federal government. This has resulted in billions of dollars in fraud. That ends once the Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act is passed into law.”

Families and small businesses will not receive tax relief unless the Senate joins the House and passes the Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act:

“The House of Representatives did their job, now it’s up to the Senate to pass the Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act and send it to President Biden’s desk to be signed into law. I strongly urge my colleagues in the Senate to pass this bill that benefits every West Virginian. There is no time to waste.”
