President Signs House Bill to Protect Vets from Obamacare Mandate

July 31, 2015 — Press Releases

WASHINGTON, DC — Today, President Obama signed the Surface Transportation and Veterans Health Care Choice Improvement Act into law. Included in the legislation are two reforms the House Ways and Means Committee has advanced to help our veterans: the Helping Veterans Save for Health Care Act and the Hire More Heroes Act. The Hire More Heroes Act provides relief from Obamacare’s employer mandate for veterans who receive health care elsewhere so that they do not count toward the mandate’s job-destroying 50-employee threshold. For more detail, see here. In response to the bill becoming law, Ways and Means Chairman Paul Ryan (R-WI) issued the following statement:

“Nobody has given more to our country than our veterans, and we should make it as easy as possible for them to find a job. Unfortunately, Obamacare comes with perverse incentives that make it harder for small businesses to hire those who served. This law will help put more veterans on the payroll by exempting them from Obamacare’s burdensome employer mandate. All working families need relief from Obamacare, and this law is more progress in our effort to repeal and replace it with real, patient-centered reform.”
