Smith Announces Human Resources Subcommittee Hearing on Opportunities for Young Adults to Break the Cycle of Poverty

May 10, 2017

WASHINGTON, D.C. – House Ways and Means Human Resources Subcommittee Chairman Adrian Smith (R-NE) announced today that the Subcommittee will hold a hearing entitled “Opportunities for Youth and Young Adults to Break the Cycle of Poverty” on Wednesday, May 17, at 10:00 AM in room 2020 of the Rayburn House Office Building. This hearing will highlight innovative approaches that help vulnerable youth and young adults between the ages of 16 and 24 transition into adulthood and move up the economic ladder

Upon announcing the hearing, Chairman Smith said:

“More than 5.5 million youth and young adults in the United States are not in school and not working. We cannot stand by and accept this as reality—our young people deserve better. Instead of counting them out, we need to focus on what works to help them find their own path up the economic ladder. I am looking forward to learning more about innovative approaches that help these ‘opportunity youth’ find private sector employment and career development as they transition into adulthood and work to break the cycle of poverty.”
