Strong Pro-Growth Policies Key to Getting More Americans Health Coverage, New Surveys Show

September 15, 2020 — Blog

Key Points:

-The strong economy prior to the COVID-19 pandemic was increasing access to insurance for workers while incomes surged, and poverty decreased.

-Two new surveys from the Census Bureau released today finally disproved Democrats’ misleading claims about Republicans’ work to provide working families with relief from the individual mandate tax.

Details:

Among other details from the Census reports:

  • Median household income increased 6.8 percent last year to $68,703.
  • Income gains for Hispanic households rose 7.1 percent.
  • Income gains for Black households rose 7.9 percent.
  • Income gains for Asian households rose 10.6 percent.
  • The poverty rate fell by 1.3 percentage points to its lowest level over the 1959-2019 period.

When it comes to health insurance, employer sponsored insurance coverage increased—a sign pointing to the fact that a strong workforce was lifting more people out of poverty and into good-paying jobs with health care coverage. And for families who determined they didn’t want or need coverage that Obamacare used to force them into, they had the freedom to opt out or purchase different options that better met their needs.

The bottom line: Democrats’ relied on fearmongering to advance their agenda, declaring that 4 million Americans would lose coverage in 2019 if they weren’t forced by the IRS to buy it and that premiums in the individual market would increase by 10 percent. That didn’t happen. Instead, work-based coverage increased, and premiums remained stable in 2019 as more and more workers enjoyed one of the strongest economies in U.S. history.
