Delivering Americans a 21st Century Health Care “Backpack”

February 02, 2017

Before Obamacare was signed into law, the Joint Economic Committee—led by Congressman Kevin Brady (R-TX) and then-Senator Sam Brownback (R-KS)—released an infographic illustrating how the 2,000-page bill would turn the nation’s health care system into a tangled web of mandates, regulations, and top-down bureaucracy.

Reporting Chart

Seven years later, many of the predictions drawn from the chart in 2010 have come true: Washington’s outsized role in health care has limited choice, driven up costs, and diminished the quality of care Americans receive.

Now as Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, Rep. Brady recently wrote in the Washington Examiner:

“Out-of-pocket costs are skyrocketing while health care choice, competition, and access are all diminishing rapidly as Obamacare’s health insurance marketplaces near collapse. This is what happens when a healthcare system is built around what Washington thinks is best instead of what patients and families want and need.”

House Republicans are working to dismantle this failing bureaucracy and clear the way for a 21st century health care system focused on what patients need—not what Washington thinks is best.

At Ways and Means, Republicans are focused on eliminating Obamacare’s one-size-fits all policies and moving toward the concept of a health care “backpack” with the tools Americans need to:

  • Purchase a health care plan that they like;
  • Manage how they spend their health care dollars; and
  • Access their electronic medical records.

Americans will be able to fill their “backpack” with what they need. And they’ll be able to take that backpack where they want to go—from state to state, job to job, or home to start a business or raise a family.

This is the 21st century health care system Americans deserve.
